    What’re your thoughts on laying down a second layer of vapor barrier over top of our existing vapor barrier in our encapsulated crawl space. It’s about ten years old and we’ve been down there a lot doing plumbing and other maintenance. The barrier we have now looks rough and has holes.

    • @CrawlSpaceNinja
      @CrawlSpaceNinja 6 дней назад

      It is best to remove any old vapor barrier as that could contaminate your new vapor barrier with mold, moisture, and just overall uncleanliness. Also you wouldn't be able to prepare the ground for the new vapor barrier if old vapor barrier is on the ground.

    Hi! We had mold air testing done in our home and the mold in our home air matched the air in our crawlspace. Long story short, there is absolutely no visible mold. We also just had all of our duct work replaced because there was gaps between the ducts and our vents but there is still mold in the crawl space air. Is it possible that it is just coming from the ground? If so, how would I deal with that without having to use harsh chemicals to kill it?

    We bought a home with a crawl space. We have zero knowledge on them. The crawl space is completely sealed. There are no vents anywhere on the outside walls. There are 2 vents in the crawl from our heating / air conditioning. Last winter my husband went to check on the sump pump in the crawl and said the crawl was hotter than the house because the heating/air vents were open fully. So he closed them 3/4 of the way. He went to check the crawl again today and said there is some condensation on the “gravel” (dont know what it is) he said not much but there is a line from the pipe condensation. Our question is, should these 2 heating/ cooling vents be open/closed, seasonal? Thank you.

    Bought a manufactured home last year, finally ripped out the carpet in the living room and replaced it with a vinyl floating floor and under that a very thick quiet mat moisture barrier. Once summer hit the subfloor under the vinyl has started warping. o_0 I am assuming the vapors can no longer escape due to the moisture barrier and is causing water damage on the subfloor causing it to warp. Before I replace the subfloor I need to figure out how to stop this from happening again... I am hoping just removing the moisture barrier under the vinyl floor will stop it... but idk.

      Both can be troublesome. We have experience in both. 10 mil tend to be two 5 mils glued together which would create that cat urine/pneumonia after it peeled away. 20 mil tends to be two thick to be used in uneven terrain.

    I have a basement with an attached crawl space that has about a 3ftx3ft opening, but the crawl space is really just a shorter part of the basement. It is finished with concrete and block walls just like basement. We’ve never had moisture issues until last year when we had a roof leak that was dripping behind the wall down into the crawl space. Since then we’ve been having a hard time keeping basement/crawl space dry. My husband sealed the floor and walls in the crawl space with randon seal and we run a dehumidifier in the basement but it doesn’t get levels down in the crawl space area. I got a fan to put into the opening that has 2 smaller fans built in that can blow in, out, or exchange air. Should I blow dry air into crawl space, suck the moist air out to blow into the basement with the dehumidifier, or have one blow in and one suck out?

    Does insulation go under or over the vapor barrier on walls

    • @CrawlSpaceNinja
      @CrawlSpaceNinja 18 дней назад

      We usually put insulation under the vapor barrier so that the vapor barrier is not compromised. Technically you can put it over the vapor barrier too if needed just keep in mind that whenever you apply your mechanical fastener through the vapor barrier it could create a place for moisture to escape.

    very good video! Question; my wooden floor is sagging when I step between supporting beams that are laid approximately 3 feet apart on the concrete floor apparently, there are not enough of support beams between the concrete floor and wood floor. I think they should have laid those supports every foot or so to give it more stability, then put the wooden floor on it and that should made it really solid floor. This is a cottage so previous owner did not invest lots of money in quality work. because sub-floor is poorly constructed and there is a quite of a sag when you step between sub-floor beams, my question is - can I inject the spray foam between existing floorboards and concrete surface by drilling through the floor boards in order to help stiffen the floor? I am thinking that maybe drilling the holes in the floor on every couple of feet between the supporting beams and injecting the foam will stiffen the floor, then I would lay over this a new hardwood floor. any pros or cons?

      It is true that you will never get rid of all the mold in your environment. If you are mold sensitive this can be a problem but what we focus on is reducing mold to what would be classified as normal levels, in other words the same levels that are on the outside of the house.

    Hey there! I really appreciate this video and how you frame alternative options besdies (extremely expensive) encapsulation. It looks like the Vollara FreshAir Cube isn't available new anywhere. Do you have any other air purifier you would recommend for a musty-smelling crawlspace? Or do you know where we can purchase a FreshAir Cube? Our master bedroom is directly above our crawlspace and the smell from our vents keeps my wife up at night :(

    I think of it as something that is very well worth it if you are LIVING in the home for a while, not something you'd do right before selling. So it's not about adding value, but adding quality of life while you're in the home. Also, if you have issues, it's going to further degrade the integrity of your home as time goes on (mold, rot, damage to wood floors, etc.). My CS encap eliminated an insect and rodent issue that nothing else would fix, the house stopped "swelling" in the summertime (doors sticking, cracks forming, etc.) and it uncovered some water intrusion that had rotted about 8 feet of rim joist/sill plate that had to be repaired. It was worth every penny (or if you DIY, every back-breaking moment of work), but I plan to be here a while. Not everything is about resale. Consider that you're extending the life of your healthy home, which will increase in value over time, which is also a return on the investment.

      Awesome thanks for your comment. You correct! Some buyers do beg for an encapsulation where sellers do get one. However its truly about you and your family.

    Ah I think your interpretation of the data during the colder months is wrong. There’s essentially no difference between all of them. The error bars overlap each other essentially every single case. There’s no statistical difference.

    Hi there sir, I live in Long Island New York near the water, but we rarely get any floods here; but also because we are so low, the foundation is mostly wet. I'm brought 2 foundation companies to check out my crawl space And one of the companies told me to eliminate all access windows and leave only 1 and make the crawl space air tight, and put a moist barrier on the ground, foam spray on the walls and installation on the ceiling. The other company told me to leave all 3 windows and put automatic ventilation windows with a commercial dehumidifier and a sub pump, and he also told me to put the same floor barrier with foam on the walls, but he told me I don't need Insulation on the ceiling. Which one should I do? Also the first company told me that I should replace all brick support columns underneath with metal adjustable rods and the other company said to leave the support as it is. They are so opposite and I don't know what to do, and they are both experts with lots of years of experience with high reviews. What would you recommend sir?

    Should there be hangers attaching the floor joist to the rim joist?

    Thank you so much!! I was considering doing this within dehumidifier but now I am going to put in the dehumidifier as a backup. 😊
